The book evaluates the canonization process from a new angle in that, according to Eusebius of Caesarea, the Rule of Faith served as a criterion of canonicity, encompassing both the subcriteria of apostolicity and catholicity. The thesis of this book is that, according to Eusebius of Caesarea, the rule of faith served as a criterion of canonicity, encompassing both the subcriteria of apostolicity and catholicity. Chapter one review F.C. Baur's Adolf von Harnack's. Walter Bauer's and Hans von Campenhausen's critique of Eusebius' depiction of the formation of the New Testament canon. Eusebius received his theology of apostolicity primarily from Irenaeus of Lyons, as is documented in the second chapter. In the third chapter, we see that Eusebius acquired his understanding that catholicity could serve as a criterion of canonicity from Origen of Alexandria. The insight that Eusebius conceived of the rule of faith as a criterion of canonicity is significant, for it provides a potential key for understanding the relationship of Scripture and orthodoxy in the ante-Nicene period.The fourth chapter is an investigation into Origen's legacy in the formation of the canon as the progenitor of the New Testament commentary. The author assimilates several streams of traditional evidence concerning Origen's romotion of the commentary as a genre of early Christian literature in order to assess his contribution to the creation of the canon. Chapter five provides a summary of the historical argument of the book and a theological reflection.
