At a time when the demand for both basic and deep knowledge of Sikhism has grown out of all proportion - due partly to the Vaisakhi 1999 celebrations and the consequent wide media coverage that Sikhism has received - there is not a single reference volume that incorporates high quality scholarship with the latest findings in religious and cultural studies and the ongoing transformations within Sikhism itself. The Encyclopedia of Sikhism aims to fill this lacuna. It will document fully the history, doctrines, schools, rituals, sacred places and basic ideas and concepts of Sikhism, placing this specialist knowledge in the context of current cultural and critical theory. It will thereby become an indispensable tool not only for students, researchers and teachers from a very wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, but to key decision and policy makers in local government and the general reader.
