Full Description

The "Political Quarterly" was founded in 1930 by Kingsley Martin, William Robson and Leonard Woolf, with help from George Bernard Shaw. The journal was intended to be a bridge between specialists, experts and the general public, discussing the great problems of the day from a progressive perspective, writing at a demanding intellectual level but always in plain English. This book sets The Political Quarterly in the context of its day and the unusual collaboration, for almost 30 years, of Woolf and Robson. The book also shows how the journal mirrored the concerns of the 1930s and 1940s, and includes a brief history of how a small but influential publication is run.

Contents

The foundings - reasons and means; the 1930's - such serious whistling against the wind; a critical journal in time of total war; the Labour government - post-war planning and the welfare state; the return of the Tories - debate on reform and on national decline; uncertain directions in the era of Wilson and Heath; editorial angst and objectivity in Thatcher-times; social democracy and beginnings of new Labour.
