This book updates and draws on the earlier well known NASEN publication, "Differentiation: Making it Work". It is updated to take account of continuing research and professional activity, widening its remit to include diversity together with differentiation. The book builds on the continuing need and demand for a range of provision to be made available to meet the special educational needs of children with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. In addressing diversity and differentiation the book is positioned within the school improvement agenda. The book provides a balance between the teaching of individuals, and the broader teaching and learning context. Taking a cyclical approach, the author focuses on evidence-based outcomes, evaluation, and relevant aspects of technology, life-based issues, all set within the general business of teaching and learning. The following 'themes' will underpin the chapter topics: effective co-ordination! role for the SENCo in supporting, differentiation characteristics of effective learning and teaching styles, how to contribute to the professional development of other staff, teaching methods to match an individual child's learning strategies, forms of differentiation, factors which inhibit differentiation, group management, the use of physical space, and resources.Understanding that! Differentiators to do it with: variety; accreditation; learning; understanding; reflection. It offers the context of the legislative framework and the SEN Code of Practice Issues of access. The book is full of practical features including: a 'how to read this book' introduction; step-by step advice; photocopy-able sections; head of chapter summaries; good practice points, revisited key points at chapters' end; and, case studies and exemplars, teaching strategies recommended further reading.
