Based on empirical research in three provincial towns in Jordan, this book investigates patterns of phonological variation and change in women's speech as an instance of the linguistic outcome of dialect contact. The linguistic analysis of the data is linked to social and political developments in the country's modern history, which have resulted in the redefinition of the social meanings associated with linguistic features and makes an important contribution to sociolinguistic theory as it applies to Arabic-speaking communities.
