Learning in the Early Years will help early years educators understand the nature, form and content of the curriculum for children aged 3-7 and the most appropriate ways of presenting it. Using the Early Learning Goals as a conceptual map of physical, intellectual, social, aesthetic and spiritual development throughout the years 3-7, it shows how educators can meet the demands of the curriculum guidance offered by the Early Learning Goals, the statutory requirements of The National Curriculum in KS 1 and the Literacy and Numeracy Strategies. Expert contributors address issues surrounding continuity, progression, subject knowledge and age-phase specific pedagogies. Individual sections deal with subject knowledge and age-phase specific pedagogy and a substantial introduction provides an overview of learning and teaching in the early years. Learning in the early Years deals with: Recent theories of child development and learning; effective provision; appropriate ways of working with young children; contemporary issues relating to subject teaching. In addition each section discusses issues concerning children for whom English is an additional language, considers the role of adults and the use of information and communications technology.
