Early career2 (with Ralt). Into Formula 1 with Lotus as a test driver in 1980 - few rated him in the early years. After 72 Grands Prix, he finally wins - the 1985 European Grand Prix at Brands Hatch, driving for Williams - and blossoms thereafter. Transfers to Ferrari in 1989 and wins first time out, becoming the darling of the Italian fans. Back to Williams for 1991, finally becoming World Champion in 1992 with nine wins from 16 races - and then he leaves Formula 1. His successful move to Indycar racing in the USA - where he becomes 1993 CART Champion. Latter days: abortive McLaren Formula 1 drive, touring cars with Ford, Grand Prix Masters series for over-45s.
