This research attempts to understand the allegory of the Pillars of Islam: when dit it appear and why did it become widespread? Even if it does not occupy the forefront, neither among the ʿulamāʾ nor among Orientalists, it is far from an empty phrase or a slogan far removed from reality. The "pillars" it highlights are and remain omnipresent in the everyday life of Muslims.
