Mit dem staatlichen Zugriff auf das Sekundarschulwesen im Jahr 1902 gerieten die klassischen Sprachen in England erstmals unter Legitimationszwang. Sie erschienen nicht mehr als das geeignete Bildungsmedium in einer Gegenwart, die von Industrie, Technik und Handel geprägt war. Vorliegende Studie untersucht die Aktivitäten der Vermittler humanistischer Bildung vor dem Hintergrund gesellschaftlicher und politischer Wandlungsprozesse von 1902 bis 1965 und macht so den Zusammenhang von Bildungsinhalten und Bildungswerten einerseits und Staat und Gesellschaft andererseits deutlich.
