BOOKSTORES & SALES OFFICES

To provide readers with a greater variety of publications, Kinokuniya Company Ltd. has opened a series of large bookstores with a wide range of Japanese and foreign books....

Domestic Stores

Transforming Shinjuku into an Information and Cultural Center
Kinokuniya’s first store was opened in the Shinjuku district of Tokyo, a thriving shopping area that surrounds a major train terminal. Shinjuku has since grown into one of Tokyo’s largest metropolitan centers, a renowned business and entertainment district lined with skyscrapers.
Following the completion of our headquarters building in 1964, Kinokuniya aggressively developed large-scale bookstores in major cities nationwide based on our corporate philosophy of providing customers with a wide variety of books and magazines. We have installed point-of-sale (POS) cash registers at almost all of our bookstores, and this allows us to grasp sales data in real time. At Kinokuniya, we utilize this data to continuously offer the best possible variety of publications. We have also established an automated ordering and restocking system as a new method of inventory management.

Opened in 1981, the New York store was first located in Rockefeller Center in the heart of Manhattan. Following an expansion and relocation to Sixth Avenue at Bryant Park, still in the heart of Manhattan, this is now
Kinokuniya's largest US outlet.

Overseas Stores

Developing Outlets Worldwide
Kinokuniya opened its first overseas bookstore in San Francisco in 1969 with the twin goals of providing Japanese living abroad with information from home as quickly as possible and introducing Japanese tradition and culture to the local community. We have since opened several other bookstores in the United States, including major stores in Los Angeles and New York.
Kinokuniya also opened several bookstores in Asia beginning with our Liang Court Store in Singapore in 1983, which served as a base for developing additional Asian outlets. The Singapore Store was followed by stores in Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. In 1996, we launched our first outlet in Oceania, in Sydney, Australia.
