20 世紀は、アメリカの生活全般において、価値観、行動様式が急速かつ激しく変化した時代です。Twentieth Century Advice Literatureは、アメリカの人々が変化にどのように対処してきたか、そして時の変遷と共に、彼らの日常生活、行動様式、慣習等がどのように変化してきたかを視覚的に示すことを目的としています。

個々人の品行や行動、家族生活の規範となったハウツー本や自己啓発本、従業員手引きや教師訓練ガイド、コースガイドなどのマニュアル本、エチケット・マナー本、社交クラブの入会規則、特定の行動を促進する商業関連の文献、政府の指示書など、15 万ページ分を収録します。家族のふれあい、男女の役割、性的関係、人種関係等、アメリカ人の考え方を示す記述を様々な角度からみることができます。

本データベースの収録資料は、アメリカ各地のアーカイブや個人所蔵から提供されたものです。その多くは、エフェメラ（ephemera。ちらしなどの短命な印刷物）として分類され、これまでほとんど図書館保存や目録化が行われてきませんでした。また、手引書やガイドの中には、特定機関で作成され、機関に所属している人たちにのみ配布されたものも多く含まれます。
